Yeah, that’s a Hamilton reference in the title.
But no, I didn’t not choose an apartment in Harlem because of the Hamilton reference.
Out of all the neighborhoods I looked at, it was the only one that made me feel somewhat at home. I recognized the music coming from radios: Slick Rick, Deborah Cox, Ice Cube. People sitting on their stoops, talking, reminded me of my summers as a kid in Detroit.
And the biggest factor was that there’s still affordable apartments in Harlem. I was able to find an affordable studio with a balcony.
Plus, I’m only a few blocks away from beautiful Morningside Park and a few more from Central Park. This is important to a Michigander like me. I can’t wait to watch all the leaves change colors.
